In heavy rain, I climbed a steep rocky trail for three hours until I reached a small hut shrouded in dense fog.

There were no other climbers. The white mist swallowed everything, and for three days, I saw nothing beyond it.

On the fourth morning, the wind shifted, and through a gap in the clouds, the spear-shaped peak of Mount Yarigatake appeared.

I stood still, speechless before its presence, while the other staff quietly continued their routine tasks.

For them, this view was not a revelation—it was their everyday life.

And soon, it became mine as well.

That single photograph I took in that moment became the beginning of five years of documenting this mountain hut’s daily life.

Kitahotaka Mountain Hut—known as Kitaho—stands at 3,106 meters, the highest alpine hut in Japan.

Each spring, the staff return to dig it out from meters of snow, welcoming thousands of climbers during the short summer, then closing it again before the snow buries it once more.

During winter, they scatter across different cities and jobs, only to reunite again on the mountain when the snow begins to melt.

When George Mallory was asked why he wanted to climb Mount Everest,

he famously answered: “Because it is there.”

If you asked these mountain workers why they return each year, their answer would be the same.

Because working here is their daily life— a quiet devotion to what simply exists.

For me, too, this place became the origin of seeing.

Photography, I learned, is not about capturing the extraordinary, but about meeting the world again as it is— without reason, without conclusion, simply because it is there.

土砂降りの雨の中、急な岩肌を三時間かけて小屋にたどり着いた。

他に登山者はいない。小屋は濃いガスに包まれ、白い霧以外なにも見えなかった。

その後も三日間、雨は降り続いた。

そして四日目の朝、風に流されたガスの隙間から、槍ヶ岳の「穂先」が現れた。

その荘厳な姿に見とれて立ち尽くす私のそばで、他の小屋番たちはいつも通りの仕事を続けていた。

それは彼らにとって日常であり、やがて私にとっても日常になっていった。

この一枚をきっかけに、私は足かけ五年、この小屋の「日常」を撮り続けることになる。

標高3106メートル。北アルプス北穂高岳山頂に位置する北穂高小屋、通称「北ホ」。

ここは日本で最も高い場所にある山小屋である。

深い雪に覆われた四月に営業を始め、十一月に閉じるまでの短い夏のあいだ、数千人の登山客が訪れる。

冬の間はそれぞれの街で別の仕事を終え、春になると再び雪と氷に覆われた山へ戻り、次の夏に備える。

登山家ジョージ・マロリーが、なぜエベレストに登るのかと問われて答えたという有名な言葉がある。

「Because it is there.（そこに山があるから）」

もし彼らに「なぜここで働くのか」と尋ねれば、きっと同じ答えが返ってくるだろう。

それは、この場所が彼らにとって、かけがえのない「日常」だからだ。

私にとっても、この場所は“見ること”の原点となった。

写真は特別な瞬間を捉えるのではなく、

ただ、そこにあるものをもう一度見つめるための行為である。

それが、この作品の始まりであり、私の写真の始まりでもある。
